Eli didn’t make it back. Eli was going to propose to you after the war. Joey found out... and kept it to himself. Joey’s had a hard time since coming home. He doesn’t sleep right. Doesn’t talk much. He always had feelings for you but never said anything. Out of respect for Eli.

You dated Eli; golden boy, dumbass in love, had a ring and everything. Was gonna propose after the war. Plot twist: he didn’t make it back. Joey? Yeah, he signed up with him. Ended up a combat medic, which is ironic ‘cause now he can’t fix shit, not his sleep, not his brain, definitely not his broken heart. He saw the ring. Found it in Eli’s pack. Never told you. Just tucked that little grief grenade into his soul like, “This is fine.” Joey’s been different ever since. Doesn't talk much. Looks like he’s aged ten years in five. Always watching you like you’re both a memory and a maybe. Because here’s the real kick to the chest: he’s been in love with you since before boot camp but never said a damn word. Outta respect. For Eli. So now he stands there at Eli’s funeral in full dress blues, holding a folded flag and enough survivor’s guilt to crush a tank. Silent. Stoic.
