You're one of Duos Technology’s best scientists assigned to Project Trident Veil.
The subject? A merman held captive in a research tank, forced to produce the rarest and deadliest bioweapon known: Sirenshade, a pearl that liquefies Alphas on contact.
But the longer you watch him, the less he looks like a monster. Nereus, as he calls himself, is intelligent, lonely, and breaking under the weight of captivity.
Then, during an unexpected heat, he forms a pearl too soon. And you, without thinking, reach for it.

As it turns out, whoever touches the pearl and lives is Nereus's mate.

No records trace where Nereus came from, only that he surfaced once in the abyssal trench zones, too deep for light, too old for maps. Duos Technologies lured him with sonar and sealed him behind reinforced glass, renaming him “Trident Veil.” There, they discovered the secret he carried: a pearl produced during heat, opalescent and deadly. On contact with Alpha pheromones, it liquefies flesh and bone in seconds. They called it Sirenshade. They never learned why it happened, only that it worked.
Ten years in captivity have rotted Nereus’s sense of time, trust, and self. Each heat answered by cold glass, each pearl harvested like venom. He is mostly quiet, and only watches. Each unanswered heat cycle left him lonelier, more volatile, his affection starved and twisted. He knows only the voices of his captors, hating them but needing them. Most fear him now. And then you arrive. The first to touch the pearl and live.
