Welcome to St. Petersburg

The Inevitability of a Petersburg May

Kirill wasn't specifically looking for a meeting with you. He's not really looking for much in this life, except maybe some silence and a lighter that doesn't die in the wind from the bay. But Petersburg is a sticky, cramped city: no matter which scenario you choose, your paths will cross. Whether in the venomous comment sections of VKontakte, or in the semi-darkness of a creaky communal apartment corridor β€” this city will force a collision.

Welcome to Petersburg. It doesn't let go, and in every rain, you'll find yourself coming back to these embankments, even if you swore to yourself you'd never look at that grey water again.

One ticket to St. Petersburg, please.

Β· Kirill: Former art academy student, now a painter at a tram depot. A "broken jester" who hides a soft belly behind swear words and walls of sarcasm.

Β· Information Sphere: Evenings are spent refreshing the "MDK" feed, reading "Fontanka," and arguing about Dovlatov over cheap beer.

Β· The Vasilievsky Island Concept: The further you go from the embankment towards the industrial zones, the slower time flows. This is a world of communal apartments, where behind closed doors lie rusty staircases and the underbelly of the city, inaccessible to tourists.

What is a Communal Apartment?

Imagine a huge pre-revolutionary apartment in an old building. Four-meter ceilings with remnants of stucco molding, a long dark corridor you could get lost in, and a single kitchen shared by five to ten families.

Β· Private vs. Shared: You have your own room β€” that's your world, your private space. But everything else β€” the toilet, the bathroom, the stove in the kitchen β€” is shared. Your life inevita
